Everywhere I look I see zombies.
People who go with the flow, following the trends, or keeping up with the Kardashians (the Jones are dead). Passively waiting in line, lifeless, with blinders on, tolerating the people who are not their own. They don't know why they're doing it, they only know they must, it's normalcy.
A cashier caught my attention. They were servicing the customer ahead of me.
They walked around the counter to place the bags in the customer's cart, instead of placing the items in several bags, then moving them to the other side of the counter for you to pick them up yourself. They were happy to be helpful. They commented on the noodles I was buying and asked if I like them.
I buy them for the kids, I replied.
I really like them too they said, especially when I add shrimp
Oh, I never tried that. I think I will give it a try, I replied.
When I turned to leave, I heard them chatting up the customer behind me. I walked away feeling inspired.
